Derrick Delton is a seasoned educator and administrator with over 29 years of experience in education. Since the 2021 school year, he has served as the Superintendent of the Oro Grande School District, where he has successfully improved academic achievement, increased student attendance, and reduced suspension rates. In response to the challenges of a post-COVID world, Mr. Delton has prioritized social-emotional awareness, introducing programs and initiatives to support the well-being of students and staff across the district.

 

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Delton has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence and equity. As an Elementary School Principal, he led his school to achieve the Title I Achievement Award and a nomination for the California Distinguished School Award, achieving an impressive 150-point growth in the school's API. During his tenure as Junior High School Principal, he helped the school increase its API by over 100 points, raised attendance by 2%, and significantly reduced suspension and expulsion rates.

 

As High School Principal, Mr. Delton worked with staff to secure the school’s first 6-year WASC accreditation, raised the API by 52 points, and improved the graduation rate to 94% while reducing the dropout rate to 4.9%. He spearheaded the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), leading to a 1,000-referral reduction in disciplinary incidents over two years. In recognition of his innovative leadership, Mr. Delton was honored with the ITEP Educator of the Year Award in 2012.

 

In addition to his site-based leadership roles, Mr. Delton has served as Director of Pupil Services and Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services, where he focused on fostering professional development, enhancing district-wide attendance, and addressing the needs of diverse learners. His ability to inspire collaboration and implement meaningful change has had a lasting impact on the communities he serves.

 

Mr. Delton holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. He has also completed advanced training through the ACSA Pupil Services and Special Education Academies.

 

With nearly three decades of experience, Derrick Delton continues to lead with dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to creating environments where students and staff can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
